Does Mental Health affect productivity in work?

So, last week on social media we asked you all the following question: “Is having good mental health outside of work, important for productivity inside of work?” With the answers “Yes” and “No”… At Sinclair & Rush, we enjoy speaking openly about the topic of mental health because essentially, it’s important! Everyone at one time in their lives has struggled with their mental health, for many reasons. In the recent months we have also created VLOGS & podcasts discussing mental health in the workplace.  Also, how to spot the signs when staff are potentially struggling, and things to do to help should it be needed. Here at Sinclair & Rush, we are true advocates of supporting each other and being kind to ourselves, because at the end of the day it’s just the right thing to do and happy staff creates a happy atmosphere & tends to increase work productivity! Winning all round!

We put this poll out to you, the public, to see if you agree with us, that having good mental health amongst all employees is vital to get good levels of productivity on a day to day. The results show that our thinking matches yours! 100% of people on all social channels that took part agree! You all think good mental health is essential for productivity within business. Some of the reasons why, we think, are as follows.

When a staff member has good mental health, they tend to sleep better at night, which means they are refreshed and ready to begin their working day in the right mind frame. Therefore, they can do their job efficiently and happily. Bad mental health generally leads to issues with sleep, either not enough or oversleeping, so you are late for work, stressed, disorganised & most certainly not ready to do your best for the business you work for. Some people may have more sick days due to their poor mental health which of course is bad for productivity.  After all, “80 percent of success is just showing up” – Woody Allen. And if people are unable to show up due to poor mental health, they won’t succeed in their role or in your business! Likewise, poor mental health can generally mean lacking in confidence and high anxiety, which will only feed down into work & mean a person doesn’t feel like they are doing a good job, they may constantly need reassurance all the time, and in some cases, struggle to do the job at all, through fear they just won’t be good enough. This of course will not be productive from a business perspective.

Similarly, good mental health tends to mean someone is looking after themselves overall, good diet, exercise etc, which helps the brain to focus so therefore people will do better in their jobs! If the person isn’t feeling good, this can affect whether they eat right, or drink enough water for example. And enough studies have shown that these things affect a person’s concentration levels which will in turn impact their working life!

Furthermore, poor mental health really does affect the passion a person has for everything good in their life, including a job they love. If someone is struggling to find the joy in life at all, they won’t be creative in their job role or excel as they should.

I could go on about the impact mental health has on productivity because there are just so many reasons as to why it relates, so if you do want to hear a little more from Ellie at Sinclair & Rush on this topic just check out our YouTube series Sinclair & Rush Ltd - YouTube  or if you prefer just to listen, head over to our Podcast - Sinclair and Rush UK LTD • A podcast on Anchor

Likewise, If you want to find what signs to look out for in your staff/friends/family & what maybe you can do to support someone who is struggling with their mental health, we always refer people to MIND - https://www.mind.org.uk/ , excellent, informative website with helpful suggestions and support.

Thank you so much for getting involved in these polls. It makes for great discussions with you all & it’s so awesome to find out what YOU All think!
