Under the Spotlight - Dan
Compliance Officer
The purpose of this is for our people to get to know you a little bit better, in a fun and relaxing way.
So let’s get right into it…
First of all, congratulations on your 15 year Work Anniversary. That’s certainly something to be very proud of and we wish you many more successful years with Sinclair & Rush. You were originally employed by Component Force and joined them on 24th May 2007. Tell us about those early days, what were you recruited to do for them and who did you report to at the time?
"I started as a Rig Operator which I did for 2 years under the Management of Paul. There were only 2 people working in the Despatch Department at the time, one of which was brand new, and the main person was about to leave the company. Because Paul and James were aware of my previous warehouse experience, they asked me if I would cover in Despatch until a replacement was found. It was only meant to be temporary but 2 weeks turned into 10 years. I really enjoyed the challenges that the Despatch role presented. It better suited my skill set which became apparent to the managers and as a consequence they promoted me to first Junior Manager and then to Despatch Manager."
Your career has undergone quite a significant change over the past few years and you are now our official No. 1 “Go To” person for all things Health & Safety related, as well as checking our policies and procedures to ensure that we are compliant as a business. That is an extremely responsible role to fulfil within the company. How do you feel about that and what, in your opinion, are your unique qualities that you bring to the table?
"I am not intimidated by responsibility but I am intimidated by taking on a role where I have little knowledge and experience in. As a result I have achieved my NEBOSH certification and the training that provided, has made me more comfortable in the role. I have a very analytical brain and I have a desire to make things as simplified as possible which is important when establishing efficient procedures."
Your job requires you to be able to work on your own for the most part of the day. Is this something that you enjoy or do you miss the people connection that you used to have in your role as Manager in the Despatch Department at Rochester?
"I have quite an active social life so I don’t come to work necessarily for the social element. I am happy to spend my day on my own without the need to communicate unless it’s integral to the task I have on hand. What I love about working on my own is that I love that I get out what I put in. It’s pretty much just up to me to get the job done."
What do you do to relax when you’re not at work?
"I don’t relax outside of work. I am a drummer and vocalist and play in 5 bands which keeps me very busy. Typically I’m busy over the weekends doing something musical - playing in pubs, bars, nightclubs, weddings, birthday parties. I also play pool and I am the Administrator for the Maidstone Pool League – my team have just won the Top Division League. My wife Ayisha and I also play a bit of badminton and the other thing I really do a lot, is bike riding – one of the fun things I do is the Red Route at Bedgebury – it’s great fun. We also like to travel and explore new countries whenever we are able to."
Just a few more fun questions before I let you go…
Sunrise or Sunset? Sunset
Summer or Winter? Winter
Dogs or Cats? Cats
Rock or Pop? Blank stare… Really?? I play in 5 bands Sharon but if I had to choose I’d say Mongolian folk pretty much takes my fancy.
Favourite food? I love a really great steak, but I’d have to say Curry. Especially being married into an Indian family, I get to taste true authentic Indian cuisine – but I will never tell them that I actually prefer Nepalese curry…
Favourite drink? Niagara – Blue Curacao (orange liqueur) with vodka & Redbull.
Favourite sports team? If you asked me 12 months ago I would have said Tottenham Hotspur, but I’m getting fed up with football so I would have to say my favourite sports team now is SMPR (an eSports team in the game of Rocket League). This is my last ditch attempt at feeling youthful by watching kids play computer games for a living.
