Under the Spotlight - Martin
Production Operator (Extrusion Rochester)
The purpose of this is for our people to get to know you a little bit better, in a fun and relaxing way. So let’s get right into it…
First of all, Congratulations on your 5 year Work Anniversary. Thank you for all your hard work over the past 5 years. We are all very proud of you. I remember you joined the company at about the same time that I started working in HR which, looking back now, seems like a very long time ago. Have the years flown for you too and what elements about your job have you enjoyed the most?
"It certainly has flown by to be honest. The type of extrusion that I did before S&R was that of manufacturing TV cables and CAT5 & CAT6 computer/network cables. Prior to that I had worked for two recycling companies, one being carrier bags and the other was recycling PVC windows back into pellets for remanufacture. So when I first started on the “tube” extrusion process, it seemed like quite a complicated one. But I gradually became used to it over time. It can sometimes be a bit of a challenge but I enjoy it and I enjoy finding new ways of improving the process. I also enjoy working with people - I’ve seen people come and go over the years and I like meeting new people and learning to work together with them."
If you think back to your first day at work, would you say you were made to feel welcome by your colleagues and invited into the S&R family that we have been building over the years?
"I think it’s only natural that when somebody starts a new job, both sides are a bit unsure of each other and it takes time to get to know each other. I felt at home and as I said, I like meeting new people so for me it was fine.
When I started, we were still all together in one building so there were quite a lot more people around that I had to get to know."
What career advice would you give to your younger self?
"I think the advice I would probably give to myself would be to learn a trade of some sorts, like a Plumber or an Electrician. That’s something that I possibly wish I had done when I was younger."
Now onto the more fun stuff… What do you do to relax when you’re not at work?
"Music is my main thing. I love to go to live gigs and do this as often as I can. I have a rather large record collection and enjoy listening to all my music. Other than that, my family, my granddaughter, my two cats and my dog all keep me very busy in my spare time."
